New Series to Activate Co-op's 2017 Vision

ACCA launches series to disover best practices, spark dialogue

Now that the United Nations International Year of the Co-operatives (IYC) has come and passed, Axiom partner Alberta Community and Co-operative Association (ACCA) is exploring how it can make its greatest impact for 2013.

One major area ACCA feels it can support is building on the ideas and action items resulting from the Gathering of Alberta Co-operatives.

For those of you unfamiliar, the Gathering was the first-ever provincewide meeting of co-operatives convening more than 100 leaders and other interested participants to explore how Alberta co-ops can build better Alberta communities together.

During the two-day meeting, participants envisioned what the Alberta co-operative sector would look like in 2017, Canada’s 150th anniversary, and developed 10 action items advancing strategic themes like co-operation among co-ops, a common co-op brand and messaging, as well as the development of health-care co-operatives.

A five-year planning horizon was adopted, and the first steps to secure this ideal future were taken by developing actionable goals.

Now it’s time for the next stage: moving these ideas from paper into the real world. To kick-start this process, ACCA is working with Axiom News, to apply a strengths-based lens to these themes.

Using Appreciative Inquiry, an asset-based organizational development model, Axiom News will explore innovative and best practices related to three strategic Gathering themes: co-operative education, co-operation among co-ops and developing co-operative enterprise hubs.

Called Activating 2017, this in-depth series will feature stories that offer potential solutions to these agenda items and serve as a launching pad for new ideas and innovation among the sector.

But that’s not enough. For real change to occur, ACCA will need input and action from its stakeholders. That’s why ACCA is launching an Activating 2017 LinkedIn group where they’ll host a conversation among co-op members who can discuss the ideas and potential opportunities for implementation.

Each theme will end with a conference call where co-op leaders can gain a better understanding of its potential while connecting and collaborating with others.

While focusing on Activating 2017, ACCA’s news program will still cover events and news taking place in Alberta, but readers can expect to see regular content related to these three themes.

We invite you to join ACCA in exploring future possibilities and models to strengthen the Alberta co-operative movement. Share the stories with your networks, join the LinkedIn group discussions, and ask yourself “How could this idea be applied to my organization or community?”

After the success of IYC, ACCA and Axiom News couldn’t think of a better way to continue ensuring co-operatives live up to their purpose: to build a better world through co-operative enterprise.
